The Hong Kong Baptist University Sociology Society is a non-profit making student society. It was established in 1964, with the aim of serving all the students who are enrolled in the program of Bachelor of Social Sciences in Sociology. Our Society organizes numerous activities for students every year, such as the Orientation Camp, Academic Week, Annual Gathering, recreational activities and other social activities. These activities provide opportunities for students to cultivate friendships outside the classroom.

Our Society also has close connections with other student bodies within the University as well as with those in other Hong Kong universities. Within our own University, we organize joint-society activities, such as Sales Week and Singing Contest (Social Sciences Shield). In cooperation with the Sociology or Social Sciences Societies in other universities in Hong Kong, we hold regular joint-U functions for students from different institutions, who may exchange their experiences and enlarge their social networks.

Achievements

Dr. William D. Hackett Prize

Every year, two four-year standing undergraduate students in the Department (one from BSocSc in Sociology and one from BSocSc in China Studies [Sociology Concentration]) are awarded the William D. Hackett Prize in Sociology for academic excellence and integrity. The two students are jointly selected by their fellow classmates and the teaching staff in a Department-wide voting exercise.

The William D. Hackett Prize in Sociology was established in honor of Dr. William D. Hackett, who diligently served the Department from 1974 to 1982, becoming Head of Department from 1975 to 1980.The amount of the Prize is derived from the income of an endowment fund donated by Miss Esther Weightman Bower in 1981 in honor of Dr. Hackett's commitment to academic excellence, his unstinting efforts on behalf of his students and colleagues, and the many Christian activities in which he was involved. The Prize was first awarded in the AY1983-1984, initially to one graduating student every year (except 1990-1991). With the establishment of two Degree programs in the Department, the Prize has been awarded to two students annually since the AY1992-1993.

Over the past thirty-two years, a total of fifty-seven undergraduate/Honors Diploma students have received Dr. William D. Hackett Prize in Sociology.

Participants in Model UN conferences, known as delegates, are placed in committees and assigned countries, or occasionally other organizations or political figures, where they represent members of that body. They are presented with their assignments in advance, along with a topic or topics that their committee will discuss. Delegates conduct research before conferences and formulate positions that they will then debate with their fellow delegates in the committee, staying true to the actual position of the member they represent.
