This course introduces the concept of social sustainability and its role in the pursuit of a sustainable community. It takes an interdisciplinary approach to discuss key principles in the pursuit of social sustainability. Using documentary films, it will discuss social issues related to social diversity, equity and social cohesion in contemporary Chinese society. Specifically, it will cover social issues such as rights protection, grassroots democracy, HIV and AIDS, homosexuality, education problems and environmental problems.
